A sculpture is a rationalised being that occupies volume, space and time.
Time of study: semester 3
Duration: 3 week project
Critic: John Andrews (studio master)
A sculpture can assume many forms- organic or geometric. But that doesn’t change the fact that a sculptor rationalised his form with basic shapes, mathematical references, scale, the science of tectonics and the understanding of its stance against gravity to bring his vision to reality. Therefore a sculpture studio must assume a highly rational approach in accordance to a rational process.
Everything about a sculpture contrasts everything natural within the valley. Both creations create opposing poetry. The closest thing to nature a sculpture may resemble is a rock (constant, unique, a moment within the landscape but separate from the landscape).
The Sculpture studio will therefore form poetry between the juxtaposition of the constant nature of rock and the imposing behavior of the manmade through technology and steel.
